Meerea Park hell hole Shiraz 2003

90+ points

Hunter Valley, NSW, Australia. 14%

A pure line of firm ripe flavour. Needs another 3 years at least.

  1. This wine has been praised in the past for its quality, but also criticised for its lack of regional character – but now the regional character (terrior) is starting to show.

I’m amazed how this wine is so fresh compared (tasted tonight) against Southern Rhone shiraz from the 2003 vintage which was also terribly hot in France. The South handled the heat better than many other regions, but still the prune-like flavours show through. Thus Hunter wine is superb in comparison. Drink now but will improve until 2016, and last until 2020 at least under good cellar conditions.
